ULE Alliance cooperates with AllSeen Alliance and OCF
ULE Alliance cooperates with AllSeen Alliance and OCF
The ULE Alliance continues its journey as an open and co-operation-minded organization. We believe that co-operation between standardisation organisations is a must for the success of the entire IoT industry.
Both the AllSeen Alliance through the AllJoyn application layer and Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) through the IoTivity application layer together promote wireless technology-agnostic application layer protocols. The goal is to enable devices using different wireless communication technologies to seamlessly interoperate and allow easy installation and maintenance. Consumers will then be able to easily purchase devices and add them to their existing smart home systems, without worrying about which wireless technology is used by the device.
However, in the real world, the device
should use some wireless communication technology. ULE can provide the basis of a best performing transport layer for these devices.
During 2015 the ULE Alliance worked with the AllSeen Alliance and the Open Interconnect Consortium (Note: the OIC recently changed its name to the Open Connectivity Foundation) to establish cooperation activities. In August, the ULE Alliance joined the AllSeen Alliance as a community member, and in November, the ULE Alliance signed a co-operation agreement with the OIC.
The intention is that the ULE Alliance will contribute the device profile specifications and the open source to these partner organisations. In addition, the plan is to initiate two projects with each partner (a total of four projects):
- Porting AllJoyn (the software foundation of AllSeen) and IoTivity (the software foundation of OIC) to run on the ULE transport layer
- Building a bridge which will enable existing ULE networks to connect with AllJoyn or IoTivity networks
At IFA, which took place in Berlin during September 2015, the ULE Alliance and AllSeen Alliance showcased a demo of ULE and AllJoyn based devices interoperating. The demo was presented at both the ULE Alliance and AllSeen booths. At the CES, which took place during January 2016 in Las Vegas, USA, the ULE Alliance and OCF showcased a demo of ULE and IoTivity based devices interoperating.
