INTERVIEW - AN UPDATE FROM THE ULE ALLIANCE CHAIRMAN
An update from the ULE Alliance Chairman
In the lead up to the 20th anniversary of DECT WORLD, we spoke with Rene Kohlmann, Chairman of the ULE Alliance:
What progress has been made with ULE in the 12 months that have passed since the last DECT WORLD?
RK: “We have the full HANFUN certification program in place and since then 15 devices have already been certified and more than 15 are currently in progress.
We have also initiated the so called 6LoWPAN program. We offered 6LoWPAN open source software on top of the ULE transport layer from April 1st this year.
This will make all nodes in the network directly accessible from the internet and the interface will make the layers above 6lowpan agnostic for the RF technique used. The service provider does not need to worry anymore about the underlying technology and can can develop any service on top of the 6LoWPAN API. As many industry standards are moving in this direction it is a first attempt to make a real unified standard for home automation.”
How would you describe the event and benefits of attending to potential delegates from outside the industry?
RK: “By attending DECT WORLD 2016, non- telephony industry delegates will get an excellent opportunity to network with the infrastructure providers and can discuss opportunities to offer end-node products or cloud services.
This will open the gateway towards home automation alongside traditional telephony services, and will make it very easy for the non- telephony industry to offer their services and end-nodes in this open infra structure.
ULE will benefit from the CAT-iq infra structure that is currently being deployed by the main service providers such as Deutsche Telecom.”
What are the best applications of ULE in the smart home?
RK: “By getting the infra structure in place for CAT-iq, ULE end nodes can be placed anywhere in the home.
The first smart home applications being deployed right now are security applications such as the wireless monitoring system from VTech, the fire alarm with voice feedback from Crow, etc.
Next to that the climate control applications,
such as intelligent thermostat or valve control from Eurotronics, will become more and more deployed.”
Where do you envision ULE will be in 5 years’ time?
RK: “Once the infrastructure has been fully deployed by service providers such as Deutsche Telecom and is established in the home, ULE will be one of the major players in home automation.
The major advantage that ULE offers is that it does not need complex infra structure systems such as mesh and router nodes all over your house to be able to cover your whole premises.
Those complex mesh structures that other standards are offering are a nightmare for consumers and will hold back large-scale deployment.
In addition to that, customers are getting used to voice control and feedback, and ULE and DECT/CAT-iq natively offer this. So, I see a smart home controlled by your voice adapting to your habits and moods.”
