STANDARDS, SECURITY AND CERTIFICATION FOCUS

Certification Program:
The ULE Certification program is now up and running; it was launched in July. Now members can apply to certify their products and make them eligible to carry the ULE Logo – a symbol of perfect interoperability. So far over 10 products were presented as candidates for certification and 9 products have been certified. You can find the list of certified products on www.ulealliance.org, under the “Certification/Certified Products” tab. If all goes according to plan, we expect to have over 30 products listed by the end of 2015.
Currently, only finished products can be certified as compliant with the HAN-FUN application layer specifications. The HAN-FUN application layer specification defines over 25 device profiles, with their mandatory and optional features. Additional profiles are in the process of definition. At a later stage we plan to enable certification of modules. This will simplify the certification process going forward.
The ULE Alliance has also created the online Certification Tool. This tool is designed to automate the certification process from the initial certification request submission by a member company, until the tests are completed and the certificate is issued. Members of the ULE Alliance can issue a request for product certification, and later be able to track the progress of their product’s certification process. The online certification tool can be accessed at www.ulealliance.org under “Certification/Certification system”. Access to the certification tool is controlled by username/password. Members can apply for the credentials at the secretariat@ulealliance.org.
Panasonic ULE Products in the market
ULE products are now hitting the market! We expect to see increasing numbers of service and product launches in the coming months.
One of the most visible ULE based product introductions was made recently by Panasonic.
Following the introduction of its ULE based Smart Home monitoring system in the US and UK, Panasonic introduced its smart home system in at the IFA exhibition in Berlin, Germany. Panasonic partnered with the insurance company Allianz to offer consumers ease of ownership – the kits can be purchased at a significantly lower price as part of an insurance purchase.
The smart home kit consists of a hub, window/door sensor, motion sensor, siren, indoor and outdoor cameras, and an optional smart plug. Different kits are offered, e.g. a starter kit, or kits with more devices. The hub can record any footage it receives from triggered smart home cameras. The cameras enable two way audio communication, so you can see and speak with a delivery person even when you’re away from home. The video and audio monitoring is very useful for baby or pet monitoring.
As part of the smart home kit Panasonic introduced a DECT handset, which connects to the smart home kit and can control it directly from the handset.
Panasonic’s cloud service grants access to the system from a smartphone at any time and location, and customers can enjoy the service without monthly contract fees.
Cooperation with the AllSeen Alliance
A member of
Bearing in mind the complexity, diversity and high number of IoT use cases, it seems impossible that a single wireless technology can provide an adequate solution to the massive number of diverse applications. This situation calls for collaboration and cooperation between various standard organizations. Openness and cooperation between various (and sometimes competing) organizations is required in order to build-up the IoT market place to the enormous size promised and expected by many.
