DECT TODAY INTERVIEW:
We need to diversify DECT so it becomes an essential technology, not just in voice and VoIP but the IoT industry, in medical and other areas where DECT is rarely associated. I'll be looking at the numbers and types of diversification within the technology, such as the numbers of devices in use, the numbers of available products and the longevity of the standard, as well as new variants, CAT-iq 3.0 and so on. There is a danger of trying to achieve too much so I prefer to focus on those that are practical and work on those, then widen my goals.
How do you plan to achieve those goals?
DH: How to get that message across? The answer is not by doing the same old thing. One thing that people who enjoy technology share is that they look at technology from the end user perspective. That means the speed of Wi- Fi, the quality of HD TV, the quality of Dolby audio – but what they share is an agnosticism about the technology behind that. They don't associate one product with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi but perceive the end-user functionality and benefits.
So there's a need to push the perceived benefits of DECT – such as looking at why a DECT headset is so much better than Bluetooth. Do users understand that the radio
has reach, that it's more secure, and uses protected spectrum? There are examples to
How do you see the DECT Forum developing over the next three years?
DH: Pretty positive – though it is both a challenge and an opportunity. It is a lot of work, so I'm not saying one or two people will replace the expert marketeers in those top DECT companies, but we can help sharpen our message.
As well as building on the past strengths, it means bringing in new members, new standards and products, new players and business models. It's also about helping the industry anticipate what's coming up and so prosper. This means a certification programme and marketing support, and a chance for players within the industry to guide us in the right direction.
We need to protect our assets too, and make sure we don't lose the value of the DECT spectrum. It means the forum will grow in terms of numbers and importance in the market, and its spectrum is an essential element in making DECT a success. One company alone won't do it but carriers installing DECT bases in home gateways is a strong lead, which lets the industry know that DECT is a technology to be built on for the future.
follow. We've seen how Samsung and Apple educate the public about the benefits of their technology – such as beautiful displays, always online, infinite applications, sending images to the cloud – and we can learn from that. We need to find out what the elements of DECT are that are better but which we haven't highlighted, and help people understand why.
Once we all share that notion, once we have a clear message, it's all about getting it out and helping manufacturers to do that. We can't force it but we can help.
