ULE IS GIVING IOT A VOICE
the smoke detector alarm was set off by a real fire and not just by burning toast. You’re trapped in your home, perhaps upstairs in the bedroom, and unable to let anyone know where you are. What should you do? The ability to open a two-way communication link to emergency services could be critical. You could identify in which room you’re trapped and get advice on what to do until help arrives. If a child were trapped by such a fire, voice-enabled services could help calm, reduce fright and dispel confusion until a rescue team could arrive.
Two-way communication is also ideal to augment your existing door access system. Let’s assume you have a ULE-enabled door access system with voice and video capabilities. When the doorbell rings, instead of running to the door to see who’s there, you could simply ask through a smart device. If you’re still not sure that you want to open the door, you could view the person on your phone handset display or ask for the picture to be shown on the nearest screen. Once convinced you want to allow access, with complete confidence you could use another simple voice command to open the door.
Now let’s take the smart home even smarter. If you could send questions to your smart devices, would they be able to respond with simple questions to verify what you want to know, and ultimately answers? Although such interaction is possible today on all internet-connected devices, mobile and otherwise, imagine how convenient it would be to have such conversations from any room in your home without searching for a particular device. You could ask “What’s the weather today?” without leaving your bedroom before dressing, or “Are the roads to work clear?” so that you could grab a bit more shuteye rather than navigate through heavy traffic.
Voice communication has an established base in every home. A smart home that can understand the human voice, the most natural of all user interfaces, means that running a secure and comfortable home is now a voice-enabled fact.
The DECT protocol was conceived and designed with support of high-quality two- way audio in mind. With the successful integration of the ULE standard into DECT- based chipsets, the IoT has a voice that’s engaging an ever-widening customer base.
ULE chipsets are available today that allow both sending and receiving information from smart devices and which have the ability to set up voice links to support full communication. For homes with DECT-enabled gateways, a simple software

update gives these chipsets control over voice-enabled smart homes. ULE adoption, built on the existing installed base of DECT, has the potential to claim one of the biggest market shares versus all other IoT wireless technologies.
DSP Group is the leading chipset supplier for DECT-based products and a key
contributor to the ULE standard. DSP Group’s ULE product offering – including the DHX91 SoC for low-power nodes, the DCX81 SoC for home gateways, the DVF99 family for hubs and Over-The-Top (OTT) boxes, and the DSP Group’s ULE module – are ready to serve as the ears, voice and sensors for today’s voice- controlled smart homes.
