DECT FORUM PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES OCTOBER 2015 – MARCH 2016
DECT Forum promotional activities October 2015 – March 2016
As part of its service to the industry, the DECT Forum takes part in marketing activities for the benefit of its members, and was present at several different conferences last year and in the early part of 2016.
Broadband World Forum: London, October 2015
The broadband industry meets at the event annually and it has proven to be a very good stage for the DECT Forum to present itself and its members. 2015 was the 5th time we took part and our 9 square meter booth was excellently positioned, close to Huawei, ZTE and Intel’s booth and meant we had a good cross section of genuinely interested participants visiting our booth. Dialog, DSPG, Intel, Binatone and VTech were all represented at the booth and were exposed to a large number of operators, system integrators, press and other industry analysts. Daniel Hartnett spoke on behalf of the DECT Forum on the subject of “Bringing HD Voice and Smart technology to the home”. Other members also exhibiting included Arcadyan, Huawei, Zyxel, Intel, Technicolor. We recommend that members take advantage of the marketing possibilities afforded by our presence there in 2016. Details are available elsewhere in this issue.
China Smart Home Summit: Shanghai, March 2016:
The DECT Forum was represented by Daniel Hartnett. The Chinese market remains one of DECT’s unconquered regions and at the same time a market of enormous potential. The Smart Home summit was an opportunity to understand the structure and nuances of this market and get acquainted with some of the players. There was a predictably strong emphasis on the Chinese market with presentations from many indigenous companies that have come to prominence in the last few years like Alibaba, Xiaomi and Mi (smart phone market leader). Other participants included Intel, AMS, Bosch Sensortek, Philips Lighting, IBM, Bose, Technicolor, DSPG, Miele, Viessmann and Haier. The event highlighted several key aspects: the Smart Home Market in China carries much promise, although most companies are not enjoying commensurate revenues as of yet. ZigBee’s presence is pronounced, with a strong position at many of the Chinese manufacturers (Philips Hue). Winning in China will require patience and investment, but also a keen understanding of its requirements. Success in other foreign markets will also enhance DECT and ULE’s position in this region.
ETSI IoT in the Smart Home (workshop): March 2016
This workshop was organized and hosted by ETSI and focused mainly on the alliances involved with, and the efforts within the standards community driving the Smart Home effort. Some of those represented were OneM2M, ULEA, ZigBee, CreateNet, KNX, EU Comission, SAREF, OpenHab. The ULE Alliance was represented by Daniel Hartnett of the DECT forum, and his contribution underlined the importance of alliances within the industry as well as pointing to the solid base of deployed CAT-iq gateways in the operator community that will make larger scale roll outs for ULE a much tidier option than many of the competing technologies. ULE was roundly recognized for the efforts being made on the standards side by TC DECT, but also for the alliance’s efforts to bring the technology into the OneM2M discussion, with the release of the 6LowPan ULE application layer interface. Presentations are all available online at ETSI.org
